As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, we joined forces with Live Yoga Teachers to run a special intergenerational yoga class in Hackney. Taking place on Thursday 16th May, primary school children in Dalston visited their local retirement home to take part in an age-friendly yoga class.
The theme of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is “Movement, Moving More for Mental Health.” With just 15 minutes a day of movement making a difference to mental health, yoga is a great activity to unite the ages and improve younger and older people’s mental health.
Why yoga? Yoga is an age-friendly activity. It can be tailored to suit different people’s mobility - from chair yoga to more active classes designed to get the heart racing.
Vanessa Langlois, Kids, Teens and Family Yoga Teacher, led the class. She said:
Intergenerational yoga promotes holistic health and strengthens the bond between different age groups. This positive interaction between older adults and young children can be mutually beneficial. Not only does it stimulate cognitive function and promote emotional wellbeing in older adults, but it also fosters a sense of joy and connection for the children involved.
Live Yoga Teachers is a marketplace for yoga classes that offers all types of yoga for all age groups: children, teenagers, adults, and older people. Find out more about what they do and how you can get involved on their website.
