6 fun intergenerational activities to try over the phone with children

Intergenerational relationships with grandparents, family friends and neighbours can be very special bonds for both young and old, and just because we can’t be together physically doesn’t mean anyone has to miss out.

Try out these ideas in your family, or suggest a virtual hangout to an older person or young family on your street.

1) Story time

Dig out any children's books you have and offer to read to children over the phone or video. If you don't have any books, why not make up a story of your own - they'll love it even more if it's about them!

2) Show and tell

Get children to find 3 things to show you over a video call, and give them a chance to share their treasures. Make sure you take your turn too!

3) Sing-along

Provide an enthusiastic audience for a mini-concert from little ones, or work with primary age children to teach one another a new song. Video time lags just add to the fun in the final performance!

4) Play a word game

Children can learn lots from playing simple word games, and have great fun too. Try 'the yes/no game' (answer questions without using the words yes or no), 'Twenty Questions' or any others you remember from your childhood.

5) Hear about their day

Especially at the moment, most of the people in a child’s house will already know all about their day. Over the phone you can be a fresh pair of ears for all the activities they've been getting up to.

6) Try an InCommon Buddies call

If you're speaking to children age 7-11, have a look at the InCommon Buddies materials - each week explores a different theme with a chance to play a game, learn something new and take on a challenge.

A note to parents: Always be mindful of what your child is doing online. Unless your child and their older friend/relative would usually spend regular time alone together in person we suggest you stay in the room to help everyone feel more comfortable.

We'd love to hear how you've been keeping in touch with people of different ages this week. Tweet us @incommonlondon, message us on facebook or send us an email to hello@incommonliving.com.
