It’s been a big few months for us at InCommon - we’ve been growing the team, recruiting new trustees, and now we’re excited to announce that we’re hiring a new CEO.
As with all big changes, this feels bittersweet, as it comes alongside the news that our co-founders Charlotte and Laura will be moving on from InCommon next year.
Charlotte and Laura started InCommon in 2017 after participating in Year Here’s social innovation programme. They met on the programme, bonding over their interest in supporting us all to stay connected to our communities as we grow older. InCommon still believes in making this vision a reality, and the organisation stays true to the values they set out 6 years ago.
Fast forward to 2023 - InCommon is now a registered charity, powered by a small, dynamic team of 7 with a fantastic board of Trustees supporting us. We’ve connected over 2,300 people across the generations through our Connect and Social Action programmes, and older people have volunteered over 3,200 hours supporting school children’s learning. We deliver our programmes in 13 locations across London and the South East, and support over 20 groups around the UK to set up and run their own intergenerational projects. Founding and growing InCommon over the past 6 years has been a huge privilege and we’re really proud of all the team has achieved so far. We now feel that the time is right for us to move on from being executive co-founders, creating space for a new CEO to lead InCommon into its next phase as an organisation.
We’ve already been on a journey evolving from a founder-led organisation to bring more voices round the table as a charity, and our focus over the next 6-9 months will be on creating a strong foundation for new leadership and planning a smooth transition.
InCommon has been such a big part of our lives over the last few years, and we have very mixed emotions about moving on. On the one hand, we are really sad to be leaving and it doesn’t feel real at all! We are incredibly passionate about this work, the impact of our programmes and the team we’ve built.
On the other hand, we want to leave well at a time when it feels like InCommon is in a strong position with really exciting opportunities on the horizon. Although it’s a wrench, moving on now feels like the best thing for both InCommon and ourselves for the long term.
Building InCommon has been an incredible journey, and we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has played a part in shaping what it is today. We’re still around for now and will be giving our all to InCommon until we leave next year, and will continue to be supporters of intergenerational work going forward.”
- Charlotte Whittaker & Laura Macartney
Although we’re sad to see Charlotte and Laura go, we know change is good and we’re excited about what lies ahead. We’re more committed than ever to our mission of bringing generations together to build more connected, inclusive and age-friendly communities, and want to be part of helping even more older and younger people to connect across the UK.
If you share this mission and passion then you could be our next CEO! You can find more details about the role here. If you or anyone you know is interested and would like to find out more, then please get in touch at recruitment@incommon.org.uk.
